Raoul Wallenberg International School opens in Sa Vileta
A building from the late 1920s that had stood unused is full of people again, this time students. The rehabilitation of the former care facility in Sa Vileta turns a historic complex of more than 10,700 m² into the new home of the Raoul Wallenberg International School.
The brief came with one clear condition: adapt the building to a contemporary international school without erasing what it already was. The original volume, façades and structure were preserved, and the effort went into reorganising the interior to create classrooms, support spaces and communal areas that work day to day.
The gesture that best sums up the project is the hydraulic tiles. They were lifted one by one, restored and laid again. Replacing them with a new floor would have taken half the time, but the memory of the building would have gone with them.
The result proves something we care about: preserving built heritage and delivering educational spaces ready for the future are not competing goals.
